4j’s Regional School Safety Team

I would like to introduce Darin Lomsdalen and Guy Okilli da Graca. Guy and Darin are part of 4j’s Regional School Safety Team. As campus monitors, Darin and Guy work closely with staff, students, and families to help ensure a welcoming, secure, and supportive environment across all Churchill-area campuses.

Their daily work includes greeting students, maintaining positive visibility throughout school grounds, responding to safety needs, and helping uphold an inclusive atmosphere where every student feels seen and supported. Don’t hesitate to stop and introduce yourself to Guy and Darin when you see them in our community!

Ask your student about Guy or Darin. At Twin Oaks you can often see them on campus at recess.

No Phones, Smartwatches, or Electronics at School
4J has adopted a policy of no electronics at school, and that they are to be turned off and put away. Here is the full 4J Electronics Policy

1st Offence: Student receives a warning.
2nd Offence: Phone/Electronic goes to office for rest of the day.
3rd Offence: Parent meeting required. Device checked in at the office daily

Kinder Hearing Screening Opt-Out
In accordance with the Oregon Department of Education’s recommendations (OAR 581-022-0705), we will conduct hearing screenings for all kindergarten students on March 6th. University of Oregon speech-language pathologists will administer the screenings. Students who do not pass an initial screening will be rescreened at a later date. If your child does not pass a second screening, you will be notified in writing, in which case a professional exam may be suggested. Students already identified as having hearing loss will not be screened. If you do not want your student to participate in the hearing screening, please complete the Opt-Out Form and return it to your child’s teacher by Feb. 27. If you want your child’s hearing checked, no response is needed.

S.T.E.M. Project Fair is coming in January.
Mark your calendars and start planning your project NOW!

At the end of January, Twin Oaks will host the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) Project Fair! If your child would like to participate, please fill out this Google Form. All projects must be completed at home, and brought to school the morning of the fair. A detailed information packet is attached to this message, including links to websites for project ideas. Now, during the break from school, would be a great time to start planning your project. When we return to school, we will send home the trifold cardboard project boards, on Friday, January 9th. That will give you 3 weeks to finish your project before the fair. PLEASE OPEN THE ATTACHMENT BELOW FOR ALL THE DETAILS...

YOU be the scientist, engineer, or technician!

The S.T.E.M. Fair is Thursday, January 29th, in the gym.

Important things for parents/guardians to know:

● This packet is a GUIDE ONLY - There are NO REQUIREMENTS to participate. Primary grade (K,1,2) projects can be much simpler!

● The fair is NOT a competition. All participants will receive a Certificate of Recognition for their efforts.

● All projects must be done at home before January 29th.

● Please drop off projects before school on the morning of January29th. Use the lower parking lot to gain access to the gym.

● Parents/guardians must take all projects home the night of the fair.

● Stay safe! Please make sure your kid’s project does not involve unsafe chemicals or objects. Supervise the use of any sharp tools.

FROM EUGENE SCHOOL DISTRICT 4J AND THE COMMUNITY

It’s School Choice Time
Eugene School District 4J offers excellent education with flexible enrollment: students may join their neighborhood school at any time or request a transfer to another 4J school (subject to available space and a lottery based on a request form due by January 31). Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in January, so please encourage anyone considering school choice to learn more about their options.

You and Your Student Can Benefit from Public Transit
Set your student up for success and learn a new life skill together this school year. Riding public transit is an important skill that brings together classroom learning and real-world experience. By riding the bus, students can practice time management, social skills, problem solving, and personal responsibility. In addition to social and emotional development, kids who ride the bus tend to get more daily exercise by walking to and from bus stops. There are benefits for families, too! Save money on gas and car maintenance, reduce your stress from juggling pickup and drop off schedules, and trust that your student is in good hands with LTD’s professional drivers. It’s free, easy, and safe for your student to ride the bus through the school year, and throughout summer. Visit the main office and ask about LTD’s free Student Transit Pass to get started.

4J Student Cards for Eugene Public Library

All Eugene School District 4J students receive their own Eugene Public Library card!

Library cards are being distributed to all new students, including kindergartners, this year. If your student does not receive a card once your home school has delivered library cards, please contact or visit the Eugene Public Library.

Eugene Public Library Student cards:

  • Provide immediate access to Eugene Public Library's online resources and the ability to borrow five physical items at a time.

    • Online resources include ebooks, audiobooks, research information, live homework help by professional tutors, streaming movies including documentaries and instructional videos, and more.

    • Physical items include books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, art and technology tools, games, educational toys, puppets, and more.

  • Are distributed by each school's library or administration office.

  • Are free of charge, including for students who live outside the City of Eugene.

  • Can be upgraded to a standard library card with higher borrowing limits at no charge.

  • Are automatically issued to all K-12 students enrolled at 4J neighborhood and alternative schools unless they or their parents choose not to participate. Charter schools are not included.

  • Are automatically renewed each school year for continuing 4J students. The initial account password is the student’s 4J ID number. We encourage you to change the password when first logging into your account and record it in a safe place. Teachers, 4J librarians, and school secretaries can assist with ID numbers as needed. Please note that Eugene Public Library cannot access 4J student ID numbers.

4J students who already have a standard Eugene Public Library card may choose to keep and use both cards or cancel one of the cards.

Do you also have preschoolers? Eugene Public Library offers free library cards to all children from birth to kindergarten who live in the 4J district, regardless of home address.

We appreciate your patience as cards are distributed. If you have questions about getting a Student card, please contact your school's administration office.

For questions about using, upgrading, or canceling a Student card account, please contact Eugene Public Library online, in person, or by phone at 541-682-5450.
